Private barista workshop on your own SMEG espresso machine

A SMEG barista workshop at home is intended for home baristas who want to learn how to better use their own semi-automatic espresso machine and coffee grinder. Geert-Jan comes to your home and works with the SMEG, coffee beans, milk and kitchen setup you use daily. The coffee grinder can be built into the machine or stand separately next to the machine.

During Barista Masterof approximately 120 minutes, you will cover coffee beans and cleaning, making espresso and adjusting the coffee grinder, frothing milk and basic latte art. You will measure how much ground coffee you use, how much espresso goes into the cup and how long it takes. Then you will taste what changes when you adjust one setting.

The workshop is suitable for one to five participants. After your request, the equipment, location and practical possibilities will be assessed and you will receive a personal total price.

Your SMEG works, but your espresso keeps changing

One espresso runs fast and tastes thin or sour, while the next runs slow and becomes bitter. You adjust the grinder, use more or less coffee, and try again, but you don't know which adjustment truly made a difference. As a result, a good outcome remains difficult to replicate.

  • You keep setting the coffee grinder finer and coarser

Without a fixed starting point, adjusting quickly becomes a matter of trial and error. You first learn to measure what is happening and then adjust only one setting at a time. This makes it clearer why the espresso runs faster or slower.

  • The taste varies from cup to cup

A sour, bitter or watery espresso can have various causes. The coffee beans, grind size, amount of coffee, amount of espresso and extraction time must be assessed together. You will learn which check is the most logical to perform first.

  • Milk and maintenance remain separate issues

Milk gets large bubbles, becomes too hot, or remains too thin to pour smoothly. At the same time, it is not always clear when the machine, grinder, and steam wand need to be cleaned. During the workshop, these actions will become part of a fixed home routine.

Is my SMEG suitable for this workshop?

Yes, when you use a working SMEG semi-automatic machine where you grind your own coffee, fill the portafilter, and make espresso. The coffee grinder can be built into the SMEG or stand separately next to the machine. For frothing milk and latte art, a working steam wand is required.

Who is Barista Master for?

Barista Master makes sense if you’ve just bought a SMEG semi-automatic machine, can’t reliably adjust your coffee grinder, or are consistently getting sour, bitter, watery, or inconsistent espresso. The workshop is also suitable if you want to learn how to choose coffee beans better, froth milk, or improve your cleaning routine. You can participate alone or practice with your partner, family, or a small group. Experienced home baristas can also have recurring problems analyzed. If you want to focus on a specific area, you can also book the 90-minute Barista Focus session.

Why practicing on your own SMEG yields better results

A setting that works well on a training machine may not produce the same results at home. Your SMEG, coffee grinder, filter basket, coffee beans, milk, and kitchen routine together form one practical setup. The amount of ground coffee, the space for a scale, and the power of the steam wand can also differ.

During the workshop, you will immediately see what happens with your own equipment. You will weigh how much coffee you use, measure how much espresso goes into the cup, and see how long it takes. Then you will taste the result and change one logical setting.

As a result, you will not learn a specific recipe or a single grind setting by heart. You will build a working method that you can use to readjust later when you open a different bag of coffee beans or notice that the espresso starts running differently.

You don't just learn which setting works now, but also how to readjust it yourself later.

Here's how we build your SMEG coffee routine step by step

Barista Mastercombines three interconnected components. First, you examine the ingredients you use, then you learn to measure and adjust, and finally, you bring espresso and milk together in your daily coffee drinks.

1. Choosing coffee beans and keeping your equipment clean

You examine the coffee beans you use at home and discuss how origin, Arabica and Robusta, roasting, roast date, freshness, and storage influence the taste. You learn why a light roast might react differently than a dark espresso blend and why the expiration date doesn't tell the same story as the roast date. The most important cleaning routines are also covered, including the brew group, portafilter, coffee grinder, and steam wand. This helps you better distinguish whether a disappointing espresso is caused by the beans, the settings, or contamination.

2. Measure espresso and adjust the grinder

You learn to work with three measurable components: how much ground coffee you use, how much espresso ends up in the cup, and how long the water takes to do so. The grind size also determines how much resistance the water encounters along the way. If the coffee grinder is set too coarse, the espresso usually flows through more easily. If it is set too fine, the flow can slow down significantly. You pull several shots, compare the measurements, and taste what changes. In doing so, you learn to adjust one variable at a time and to more precisely assess sour, bitter, thin, or heavy espresso.

3. Frothing milk and basic latte art

What you can improve yourself after the workshop

You know what you check first

When your espresso tastes different, you don't have to randomly change multiple settings. You first learn to look at the coffee beans, the amount of ground coffee, the amount of espresso, the brewing time, and cleaning. This makes the next adjustment easier to explain.

What you can improve yourself after the workshop

You're building a repeatable coffee routine

You always perform the main actions in the same order. This makes differences more visible and allows you to make more targeted adjustments later when you open a new bag of coffee beans or when the espresso starts to flow faster or slower.

Frequently asked questions about the SMEG barista workshop at home

Is every SMEG espresso machine suitable for the workshop?

This workshop is intended for a working SMEG semi-automatic machine where you grind coffee yourself, fill the filter holder and make espresso. The coffee grinder can be built into the machine or stand separately next to the SMEG. For frothing milk and latte art, a working steam wand is required. Fully automatic machines, capsule machines, pad machines, manual lever machines, machines used exclusively with pre-ground coffee, and defective equipment are not suitable. Therefore, when making your application, always state the exact model of your espresso machine and coffee grinder.

What will I learn during the Barista Master and how long does the workshop last?

Barista Mastertakes approximately 120 minutes. You will cover choosing and cleaning coffee beans, making espresso and adjusting the coffee grinder, frothing milk and basic latte art. You will weigh coffee and espresso, measure the brewing time, pull multiple shots and taste what changes when you adjust one setting. Questions can be asked throughout the workshop.

What does a private SMEG barista workshop at home cost?

We're here to make things easy for you! Your first step to getting the right size is checking out our size chart. It's got all the info you need to measure yourself and find your perfect fit. We also provide extra details on each product page, like the model's size and fit descriptions. If you're still not sure, our team is always happy to help. Just send us a message!

What do I need to prepare, and can other people participate?

Preferably provide at least 250 grams of coffee beans you normally use at home and at least one liter of chilled milk. Also, have your working SMEG, coffee grinder, milk jug, suitable tamper, cloths, and cups ready. Approximately two square meters of clear workspace is needed, with a power outlet and sink nearby. One to five participants fall within the same workshop price. With more participants, the available practice time will be divided among more people.

Will my SMEG be repaired and what will I receive afterwards?

The workshop is a training session and not a repair service. Settings and usage problems can be discussed, but technical repairs are outside the scope of the service. Afterwards, you will receive a comprehensive follow-up email with a summary, downloads, checklists, and additional explanations. During the first few weeks, you can ask short questions about techniques and settings covered during the workshop.

I have another question...

Learning to set up and use your SMEG espresso machine at home

A SMEG semi-automatic machine gives you control over the coffee that ends up in your cup. You choose the coffee beans, decide how much coffee to grind, prepare the portafilter, and determine how much espresso to extract. This freedom makes espresso interesting, but can also be confusing at first.

When an espresso tastes sour, bitter, or watery, a new accessory isn't automatically the solution. First, it needs to be clear which step needs changing. Are the beans still fresh? Is the coffee grinder too fine or too coarse? Do you always use the same amount of coffee? Does the same amount of espresso always end up in the cup? Is the machine clean?

During the private workshop, you'll distill these questions into a consistent working method. If you want to review all general terms and conditions, location conditions, and preparations first, read more about the private home barista workshop on your own espresso machine.

If you want to calmly repeat the three most important measurements later, then The 3 Golden Rules of Espressowill help you with practical adjustments. For a consistent cleaning routine, you can use the explanation on cleaning and maintenance of your espresso machineas a reference.
