Barista Workshop for Your Sage Barista Express Impress

During this barista workshop for the Sage Barista Express Impress, you'll learn how to work with the machine you use daily, right at home. Geert-Jan will look at your beans, settings, taste preferences, and daily coffee routine. You'll practice how to adjust the integrated coffee grinder to be finer or coarser, how to assess whether enough ground coffee is ending up in the filter basket, and how to correct an espresso that tastes too fast, too slow, sour, or bitter.

The Impress Puck system will also be covered. This system helps with dosing and evenly tamping the ground coffee, but the taste still depends on factors such as the beans, grind size, and the amount of espresso in the cup. Choose Barista Focusfor approximately 90 minutes for a maximum of two main components, or Barista Masterfor approximately 120 minutes for the full training. The workshop takes place at your home and can accommodate one to five participants.

Your Sage helps you dose and tamp, but the espresso is inconsistent

The Barista Express Impress takes some of the preparation out of your hands, but does not automatically choose the right bean, grind size, or amount of espresso for your taste. As a result, the same machine can make a good espresso one day and taste sour, bitter, or watery the next.

  • The espresso runs too fast or too slow

If the grind is too coarse, the water often flows too quickly through the ground coffee. If the grinder is set too fine, the espresso can drip or barely flow through. During the workshop, you will learn what to look for, taste, and then adjust.

  • The Impress Puck system does not yet deliver a predictable taste

The system helps with dosing and tamping, but cannot correct an incorrect grind, old beans, or an unsuitable amount of espresso in the cup. You will learn how to assess these components together.

  • The milk gets large bubbles or remains too thin

With the manual steam wand, you decide when to add air and how to swirl the milk. You practice creating a glossy, even milk texture suitable for cappuccinos and simple latte art.

Why a personal explanation on your own Express Impress makes a difference

An instructional video can show you where a button is, but it doesn't see what coffee beans you're using, how old they are, what grind size you've chosen, or how much espresso ultimately ends up in your cup. It's precisely that combination that largely determines what you taste.

The Sage Barista Express Impress helps you dose and evenly tamp the ground coffee. After that, you still need to assess how quickly the water flows through the coffee and how the espresso tastes. During the workshop, you'll make multiple espressos, measure what happens, and taste the difference after an adjustment. This way, you won't just memorize a setting that only works for today. You'll build a simple methodology that you can later use to adjust new coffee beans and specifically correct a non-standard espresso.

You don't learn one fixed setting, but how to determine for yourself what the next adjustment should be.

How to get more control over your Sage Barista Express Impress

The workshop follows a practical route: first assessing what you are currently doing, then making targeted adjustments, and finally building a routine that you can repeat independently.

Request your price and availability

Step 1: We examine your machine, beans, and current workflow

We'll start with what you already do at home. Which beans do you use? How long have you had the machine? What setting is on the integrated grinder? How does the espresso taste, and what challenges do you face? We'll also check if the machine is clean and working correctly. This will quickly clarify whether the problem lies primarily with the coffee beans, the grind size, the amount of ground coffee, the amount of espresso in the cup, or the way you froth milk. You'll receive explanations in plain language and can ask questions throughout the workshop.

step 2: We measure, taste, and adjust the espresso

Then, we'll brew several espressos on your Express Impress. We'll observe how much ground coffee is used, how much espresso ends up in the cup, and how long it takes. If the espresso flows too quickly, the grinder might need to be set finer, for example. If it flows too slowly, a coarser setting might be required. You'll taste what a change does and learn why you should always adjust one clear step at a time. We'll also discuss the role of the Impress Puck system and what it cannot correct for you.

Step 3: We build your repeatable coffee routine

Frequently Asked Questions about the Sage Barista Express Impress workshop

Which workshop can I choose?

You choose Barista Focus(approx. 90 minutes) or Barista Master(approx. 120 minutes). With Focus, you select a maximum of two main topics. Masterincludes all three: choosing and cleaning coffee beans, making espresso and adjusting the integrated grinder, and frothing milk with basic latte art.

Can I participate with others?

Yes. One to five participants are covered by the same workshop price. The workshop duration remains 90 or 120 minutes. With more participants, the available explanation and practice time is divided among more people. A group of more than five people must be requested in advance and usually requires a customized setup and quote.

What do I need to prepare for the workshop?

We're here to make things easy for you! Your first step to getting the right size is checking out our size chart. It's got all the info you need to measure yourself and find your perfect fit. The reserved time and agreed price remain valid. Therefore, always report technical problems before final confirmation.

Does Geert-Jan only give this workshop in Utrecht?

More distant locations are assessed per request based on travel distance, travel time, and practical feasibility. You will always receive a personalized total price in advance.

I have another question...

Personal help with adjusting your Sage Barista Express Impress

The Sage Barista Express Impress combines an espresso machine, an integrated coffee grinder, and a system that assists with dosing and tamping ground coffee. This makes preparation more straightforward, but a good espresso still requires choices. The coffee beans must be suitable and sufficiently fresh, the grinder must match those beans, and you need to monitor how much espresso ends up in the cup and how long it takes.

During the workshop, you will learn to assess these steps in plain language. "Grind size" simply means how fine or coarse the machine grinds the coffee. "Extraction time" is the number of seconds it takes for the espresso to flow out of the machine. Measuring helps you see what's happening; tasting tells you if the adjustment also suits your taste.
