Private at-home barista workshop on your own espresso machine

A private barista workshop at home is intended for home baristas who want to learn how to better use their own semi-automatic espresso machine and coffee grinder. Geert-Jan de Baristaman comes to your home and looks at the combination of your machine, grinder, coffee beans, milk, taste preference, and daily working method.

You choose between Barista Focusof approximately 90 minutes and Barista Masterof approximately 120 minutes. During the workshop, coffee beans and cleaning, espresso extraction and adjusting the coffee grinder, frothing milk, and basic latte art can be covered. You practice yourself and learn what to measure, taste, and adjust.

The workshop is suitable for one to five participants and is offered starting from €179. After your request, you will receive a personalized total price based on the chosen variant, workshop location, travel distance, and practical feasibility.

You have a good espresso machine, but your coffee is inconsistent

A semi-automatic espresso machine does not automatically make a good espresso. The coffee bean, grind size, dosage, brewing time, yield, and method must all be aligned. If you don't know which setting to adjust, you often keep trying without understanding why the result changes.

  • Your espresso tastes different every time

One shot runs fast and tastes sour or watery, while the next one turns out bitter or heavy. You adjust the grind size or dosage, but you're not sure which adjustment was actually needed.

  • You can't reliably adjust the coffee grinder

New coffee beans, a different roast date, or a small change in grind can alter your espresso. You're missing a consistent method to readjust the grinder and check the result.

  • Milk, beans and maintenance remain separate issues

Your milk gets too thick, too hot or too airy, you choose beans primarily based on their packaging and you don't know exactly when the machine or grinder needs to be cleaned. This means you lack a repeatable coffee routine.

What does a private at-home barista workshop entail?

Geert-Jan will give you a personal explanation at your home on your own working semi-automatic espresso machine and coffee grinder. You will learn to assess coffee beans, adjust the grinder, measure and correct espresso and, if you provide milk, froth milk and basic latte art. You choose Barista Focusof approximately 90 minutes or Barista Masterof approximately 120 minutes. After your request, you will receive a personal total price and available times.

Who does this make sense to?

Why learning on your own espresso machine is more rewarding

Every espresso machine, coffee grinder, and coffee bean reacts differently. A setting that works well on a training machine may not yield the same results at home. Filter size, grind setting, dosage, warm-up time, steam power, and daily routine also influence what ends up in your cup.

During a home workshop, you'll immediately see what happens with your own equipment. You'll measure dosage and espresso yield, taste the difference between shots, and adjust the coffee grinder step by step. For milk-based drinks, you'll practice with the steam wand and milk you also use at home.

As a result, you won't just learn a single recipe by heart. You'll develop a method that allows you to recalibrate yourself later when you use different coffee beans or notice that your espresso changes.

You not only learn what setting works, but also how to discover for yourself what the next logical adjustment is.

1. Choosing coffee beans and properly cleaning your equipment

You will discuss which coffee beans you use at home and how origin, Arabica and Robusta, roast, roast date, freshness and storage affect taste and adjustment. You will learn which beans make sense for your machine, taste and favourite coffee drinks. Daily and periodic cleaning will also be covered, including backflushing, descaling, cleaning the coffee grinder and maintaining the steam wand. This part usually takes about 30 minutes. Cleaning is part of this theoretical module and is not a separate fourth optional module.

2. Making espresso and adjusting your coffee grinder

You work with the three golden rules of espresso: dosage, espresso volume, and extraction time. You pull multiple shots, measure the result, and taste how it changes when the the grind is made finer or coarser. You also learn to recognize sour, bitter, thin, or inconsistent espresso and how to correct it effectively. Ideally, you should work with your own coffee beans. If you don't have any or if they're not suitable, you can use the Aficionadoprovided. This practical component usually takes about 45 minutes and helps you build a repeatable home routine.

3. Frothing milk and basic latte art

What you can improve yourself after the workshop

You'll continue to work on the same equipment

You don't have to translate the instructions of a training machine to your own kitchen. The settings, working methods and points of attention are directly linked to the espresso machine and coffee grinder you use daily.

Frequently asked questions about the private at-home barista workshop

Which espresso machines are suitable for the workshop?

The workshop is exclusively intended for a working semi-automatic espresso machine with a working integrated coffee grinder or a working separate coffee grinder. The user must be able to grind, dose, tamp, and extract coffee themselves.

Fully automatic machines, capsule machines, pod machines, manual lever machines, machines used exclusively with pre-ground coffee, machines without a steam wand, and defective machines or coffee grinders are not suitable. Always provide the brand and model of both the espresso machine and the coffee grinder with your request.

The workshop is a training session, not a repair service. Minor adjustments and usage issues can be addressed, but technical repairs are outside the scope of the service. If the equipment is found to be defective upon arrival or different from what was confirmed beforehand, the workshop will be adjusted where possible. The reserved time will continue to run, and the agreed price will remain valid.

What is the cost of the workshop and what does the price include?

Barista Focusof approximately 90 minutes is available from €179. Barista Masterof approximately 120 minutes is available from €219. The starting prices apply to locations in Utrecht with a limited travel distance from Geert-Jan's departure address.

The final total price depends on the workshop variant, location, travel distance, and practical feasibility. The price includes VAT, preparation, use of provided materials, travel time, travel costs, any parking costs, the workshop, the standard follow-up email, downloads, and a few brief follow-up questions in the first few weeks. You will receive the full price before you decide and pay.

What do I need to prepare and what will Geert-Jan bring?

We're here to make things easy for you! Your first step to getting the right size is checking out our size chart. It's got all the info you need to measure yourself and find your perfect fit. We also provide extra details on each product page, like the model's size and fit descriptions. If you're still not sure, our team is always happy to help. Just send us a message!

Can I participate with others or use multiple machines?

Yes. One to five participants are covered by the same workshop price. The workshop will still last approximately 90 or 120 minutes. The more participants there are, the less individual practice time is available per person.

More than five participants must be requested in advance and usually require a longer workshop and a customised quote.

Guests may bring their own suitable espresso machine to the applicant's home. Each additional machine requires setup and handling time, which means less personal attention is available per machine. The price calculation remains based on the address where the workshop actually takes place.

Does Geert-Jan cover all of the Netherlands, and what requirements must the location meet?

Geert-Jan primarily offers workshops in the Central Netherlands, Utrecht, and surrounding areas of the Randstad and adjacent regions. Locations further afield are not automatically excluded. Each request is assessed based on travel distance, travel time, accessibility, and the ratio between travel time and workshop duration.

Homes, apartments, higher floors, and locations without an elevator are possible. Paid parking or parking within walking distance is also not an issue; any parking costs will be included in the total price communicated in advance. At the workshop location, approximately two square meters of free workspace, a power outlet, and a sink with running water are primarily needed.

I have another question...

Private barista workshop on your own espresso machine in the Netherlands

A private barista workshop at home is intended for home baristas who want practical help with their own semi-automatic espresso machine and coffee grinder. The workshop is not a public group lesson with unknown participants and not a training on a standard machine in a classroom. Geert-Jan works with the equipment, coffee beans, milk, and coffee routine that you actually use at home.

You can participate as a beginner, but also if you have been making espresso for a while and want to analyze specific problems. Think of a coffee grinder that is difficult to adjust, sour or bitter espresso, varying extraction times, wrong bean choice, milk that becomes too airy, or uncertainty about cleaning and maintenance.

The workshops are mainly given in Central Netherlands and surrounding parts of the Randstad. Other locations in the Netherlands are possible in consultation. You will always receive a personal total price in advance.
