Private at your home

On your own DeLonghi Opera

For beginners and experienced home baristas

Personal explanation from Geert-Jan

Private barista workshop on your DeLonghi La Specialista Opera

A DeLonghi La Specialista Opera offers many possibilities for making espresso and milk-based drinks at home, but that doesn't automatically mean every setting feels intuitive right away. Especially when you switch coffee beans or when espresso suddenly tastes different, it can be difficult to determine what to adjust first.

During this private workshop, Geert-Jan de Baristamanwill come to your home, and you will work on the Opera you use daily. You will together look at your coffee beans, current settings, working method, and the taste in the cup.

The goal is not for you to memorize one setting. You will learn to understand what changes when you grind finer or coarser, extract more or less espresso, or use different coffee beans. This will enable you to make adjustments much more independently even after the workshop.

You have a good machine, but the espresso remains inconsistent

The Opera can support many actions, but you still have to make choices about coffee beans, grind, and the amount of espresso that ends up in your cup. If you don't know what effect each choice has, you can easily change multiple settings at once, making it more difficult to discover why the taste changes.

  • You keep twisting the grind setting

The espresso runs too fast or too slow and you try different grind settings. Sometimes it gets better, sometimes not. During the workshop, you will learn which changes are logical and why.

  • The same settings don't always produce the same taste

A new bag of coffee can behave differently than the last. Roasting and freshness also play a role. That's why you'll learn not only to copy a setting, but to readjust when your coffee changes.

  • Frothing milk remains difficult

You might get large bubbles, milk that is too thin, or foam that does not mix well with your espresso. You practice how to add air, swirl the milk, and stop when the texture is right for your milk drink.

Can you get personal home assistance with your DeLonghi La Specialista Opera?

Yes. During a private workshop, Geert-Jan will come to your home and you will work directly on your own DeLonghi La Specialista Opera. You will not only learn which setting works at that moment, but more importantly, how to recognize what to adjust when your espresso changes again later.

Who is this workshop for?

For home baristas who have just bought a La Specialista Opera, and for those who have been using it for a while but want more control over coffee beans, grind, espresso, milk, or their daily routine.

One good setting is not enough

Suppose your espresso tastes good today. Then the problem seems solved. But when you use different coffee beans next week, the same settings can suddenly give a very different result.

That's why simply remembering a "good setting" for your grinder is not enough. You'll benefit more from a simple way to assess what's happening yourself. How much coffee are you using? How much espresso ends up in your cup? How long does that take? And most importantly: how does the result taste?

During the workshop, you'll combine measuring with tasting. You won't randomly change three things at once, but rather adjust one component step by step. This way, you'll discover what effect that change has.

If you want to practice this way of working again later, The 3 Golden Rules of Espressodirectly connects to what you'll use during the workshop.

You don't learn to remember one good setting, but to find a good setting again.

Here's how we'll build your coffee routine step by step

The full workshop revolves around three components that together determine what ultimately ends up in your cup. At Barista Master, you cover all three. At Barista Focus, you choose a maximum of two components that best suit your needs.

Part 1: Choose coffee that suits your taste

Before you start adjusting all sorts of settings, we'll look at the coffee itself. You'll learn the difference between Arabica and Robusta, what light, medium, and dark roast mean, and why the roast date is important. We'll discuss the beans you use at home and see if they match your taste and the drinks you usually make.

Cleaning and maintenance are also part of this section. A dirty machine, grinder, or steam wand can affect taste and performance. So, you won't just get a separate story about coffee beans, but a foundation that helps you understand what you're putting into your machine and how to keep your equipment clean.

If you want to delve deeper into this later, Roast date and freshnesswill help you recognize when the coffee itself is part of the problem.

Part 2: Dialing in your espresso step-by-step

Then we'll get practical with espresso brewing. You'll observe how much ground coffee you use, how much espresso ends up in the cup, and how long it takes. Afterwards, you'll taste the result.

If your espresso runs too fast, tastes sharp, or is heavy and bitter, we won't just look at the taste, but we'll trace back which setting likely influenced it. The integrated grinder will be adjusted to a finer or coarser setting, and then we'll make another espresso.

By pulling, measuring, and tasting multiple shots side-by-side, you'll discover how one small change affects the outcome. This helps establish a routine you can use later when you open new coffee beans.

Part 3: Froth milk and practice your first latte art

What you will be better able to assess after the workshop

You know what to adjust first

When espresso tastes too fast, too slow, sour, bitter or watery, you can more accurately determine whether you need to look at the coffee beans, grind size, amount of coffee or amount of espresso.

What you will be better able to assess after the workshop

You can readjust for other coffee beans

You are less dependent on one fixed grind setting. If new beans react differently, you have a method to find a suitable setting again.

Frequently Asked Questions about the DeLonghi La Specialista Opera Workshop

Is this workshop suitable if I have just bought my DeLonghi La Specialista Opera?

Yes. Especially when you've only been working with the Opera for a short time, it can help to build a consistent workflow from the start. You'll learn what to check first, how to adjust the integrated grinder step-by-step, and how to avoid changing multiple settings at once. If you already have more experience, the workshop can be used to examine specific issues in your current routine.

What will I learn about adjusting espresso?

You will learn to work with three simple metrics: how much ground coffee you use, how much espresso ultimately ends up in your cup, and how long that takes. Afterwards, you taste the espresso and make a targeted adjustment to one component. This way, you learn why your espresso changes instead of just copying a grind setting.

What does a private workshop on my DeLonghi La Specialista Opera cost?

What do I need to prepare at home for the workshop?

Ensure your DeLonghi La Specialista Opera is working and there is space for everyone to stand around the machine. Preferably use at least 250 grams of the coffee beans you normally drink at home. For frothing milk, you will need at least one liter of chilled milk, and preferably a bit more if there are multiple participants. Also, prepare your milk jug, cups, and cleaning cloths. There must be an electrical outlet and a sink with running water nearby.

I have another question...

Learn to adjust your DeLonghi La Specialista Opera yourself after the workshop

The main outcome of a workshop is not that your DeLonghi La Specialista Opera is perfectly adjusted just once at the end. Coffee changes. You buy different beans, a bag gets older, or you suddenly want to try a different taste. Then you need to know how to re-evaluate the result.

During the workshop, you will therefore learn to measure, taste, and adjust specifically. You will look at how much coffee you use, how much espresso ends up in the cup, and how long that takes. Then you taste and change one component at a time.

If you want to calmly review this approach later, you can continue withThe 3 Golden Rules of Espresso. There, the same basics are reduced to a simple system that you can reuse while making coffee.

If you notice that the coffee itself has a significant influence on your results, thenRoast date and freshnesswill help you assess whether you are working with beans that are still pleasant to use.
