Why this tool helps make better coffee
A latte macchiato is not just espresso with a lot of milk. It's the layering that makes this drink recognizable: warm milk at the bottom, espresso added later, and a distinct layer of milk foam on top.
If you use a glass that is too small, you will quickly run out of space for the foam or have to adjust your quantities to fit the crockery. If you use a short and very wide glass, you will get the same ingredients in your drink, but some of the typical tall appearance of a latte macchiato will be lost.
For a beginner home barista, confusion about the capacity of the glass can also easily arise. A 350 ml glass does not mean that you should use 350 ml of coffee and milk.
Barista Essentials uses approximately 38 ml of espresso and 200 ml of milk in its own recipe. That's a total of about 238 ml before you account for the extra space taken up by the frothed volume. A 350 ml glass therefore provides a margin to slowly build the drink without having to fill it to the brim.
This glass combines a 350 ml capacity with a height of 14.5 cm and a diameter of 71 mm. This results in a relatively tall coffee glass with ample space for milk, espresso, and foam.
The transparent design makes a difference in presentation, especially for latte macchiato: you can see how the milk, coffee, and foam are distributed in the glass. The ribbed exterior also adds more texture when you hold the glass.
The material is borosilicate glass. Barista Essentials states that the glass is suitable for both hot and cold drinks. Therefore, you don't only have to use it for classic hot latte macchiato. Iced latte, iced americano, and espresso tonic also fit the size.
Do you not only want to use the right glass, but also understand how much espresso, milk, and foam you actually need? In Module 10 – Coffee Drinks and Ratiosyou will learn how latte, cappuccino, flat white, americano, and latte macchiato are built from espresso.
A tall and spacious coffee glass in which you can clearly build up your latte macchiato and which also fits larger hot and cold coffee drinks.
Who is this product suitable for?
This glass is a logical choice if you regularly make latte macchiato at home and find that regular cappuccino or coffee cups are too small or too short for it.
It suits you well if you:
- want room for milk, espresso, and a clear layer of milk foam;
- like to use a tall glass where you can see the different layers;
- find a capacity of 350 ml pleasant without having to fill the glass completely;
- make iced latte, iced americano, or espresso tonic in addition to hot latte macchiato;
- are looking for one glass that you can use for multiple larger coffee drinks;
- are looking for a dishwasher-safe coffee glass;
- prefer holding a ribbed glass over a completely smooth one.
If you mainly make milk-based drinks, a good-sized milk jug is at least as important as the glass you pour into. For this, check out theStainless steel milk jugs for home baristas.
Who doesn't need this product?
This glass is less logical if you are actually looking for a smaller cup for cappuccino, flat white or a compact caffè latte.
A cappuccino, for example, is usually served in a much smaller cup. Barista Essentials also distinguishes between the 350 ml tall glass and its 250 ml latte cups. If you mainly drink caffè latte and prefer a wider ceramic cup, then it's better to look at the 250 ml latte cups.
The glass is also not automatically the best choice if:
- you already have a tall glass of about 300 to 350 ml that works well;
- you are specifically looking for a double-walled thermal glass — Barista Essentials does not state that this model is double-walled;
- you want to place the glass directly under an espresso machine and have less than 14.5 cm of free height;
- your problem is actually that your milk doesn't froth properly;
- your latte macchiato tastes too weak, too strong, or out of proportion.
In these latter cases, a different glass will hardly help. You should first look at the espresso, milk texture, and the ratio between the two.

Compatibility
The glass is not tied to a specific brand or type of espresso machine. You can brew the espresso separately and then pour it into the glass, so the height under your coffee spout is usually not important.
If you do want to place the glass directly under your espresso machine, first check the available space between the drip tray and the spout. The glass is 14.5 cm high. If you have less space, catch your espresso in a smaller shot glass or espresso pitcher and then pour it in.
The diameter of the glass is 71 mm. Barista Essentials specifically highlights this relatively narrow shape as practical for pouring espresso and for the high layering of a latte macchiato.
Also, pay attention to the difference between capacityand recipe. The 350 ml is the maximum capacity of the glass. So you don't have to make 350 ml of beverage. For example, in the Barista Essentials recipe, a latte macchiato consists of approximately 38 ml of espresso and 200 ml of milk, after which frothing provides extra volume.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man
With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.
From practice:
Geert-Jan the Baristaman assesses this glass based on its size, shape, material, and the practical role that a tall coffee glass plays in making and serving latte macchiato.
My advice:
A separate latte macchiato glass isn't a necessary purchase to make delicious coffee. If you already have a tall glass at home of about 300 to 350 ml, with enough room for milk and foam, you can certainly start with that.
The added value here lies mainly in the size and ease of use: 350 ml capacity, 14.5 cm height, a relatively narrow diameter, and a transparent form in which the layers remain visible.
More important than the glass is still what you put in it. A beautiful tall glass won't fix espresso that tastes too sour or bitter, and won't make coarse, unstable milk foam any better.
If your espresso isn't consistently good yet, start with The 3 Golden Rules of Espresso. If you know how to make espresso but are unsure how much milk, foam, or water belongs in different drinks, then Coffee Drinks and Ratiosis a much better fit.

Geert-Jan's tip:
For a latte macchiato, make sure you have enough space in your milk pitcher, as milk increases in volume when frothed. If you regularly make larger milk-based drinks, a larger model from the stainless steel milk pitcherscollection is more practical than a pitcher that's almost full before you start steaming.

Also learn what should be in your latte macchiato
While a good glass helps with serving, the taste is primarily determined by your espresso, milk, and the ratio between the two. Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy the Latte Macchiato Glass at The Barista Shop or at Barista Essentials?
You order the glass directly from Barista Essentials. The Barista Shop will help you choose and understand the role of the glass in your coffee routine. Payment, shipping, delivery, returns and service are handled by Barista Essentials.
Do I pay more when I order through The Barista Shop's link?
No, Barista Essentials determines and displays the current selling price when you open the link. The Barista Shop may receive a commission when you order through the referral link, but you do not pay for it.
Will the Latte Macchiato Glass fit under my espresso machine?
The glass itself is not tied to a specific brand of espresso machine. If you want to place it directly under the spout, measure the distance between your drip tray and coffee spout. You will need at least slightly more than 14.5 cm of space to be able to easily place and remove the glass.
If you have less space, that is not a problem for making latte macchiato. Prepare the espresso in a small glass or jug and then pour it into the tall glass. This also aligns well with the classic way a latte macchiato is built up.
Can the glass go in the dishwasher and can I also use it for iced coffee?
Yes. Barista Essentials states that the borosilicate glass is dishwasher safe and suitable for hot and cold drinks. Besides latte macchiato, you can therefore also use it for iced latte, iced americano, and espresso tonic, for example.
When is this glass not my first logical purchase?
If you already have a tall glass of about 300 to 350 ml that you enjoy drinking from, you don't necessarily need to buy a separate latte macchiato glass.
Even if your latte macchiato doesn't taste good, I wouldn't automatically start with the glass. An espresso that is too sour or bitter, too much milk, or poorly frothed milk will not be solved by different glassware.
If you want to better understand how to build the drink, start with Coffee Drinks and Ratios. If you're struggling with your espresso itself, then The 3 Golden Rules of Espressois a more logical first step.
If you do order the glass, payment, delivery, returns, warranty, and any right of withdrawal will be handled through Barista Essentials and according to their current terms and conditions.
