Thuisbarista gebruikt een koffieverdeler in een gevulde filterdrager voor het tampen van espresso

☕ Starting with espresso? When does a coffee distributor truly help?

When you're just starting with espresso, you'll quickly encounter all sorts of tools. A tamper, coffee scale, dosing ring, WDT tool, and coffee distributor all seem to promise something you want: espresso that extracts consistently and tastes good every time.

During workshops, I often see home baristas buying extra tools even though they don't yet know precisely how much ground coffee they're using, how much espresso ends up in the cup, or how long the extraction takes. In such cases, a new accessory usually offers less improvement than expected.

A coffee distributor can certainly have a useful place in your routine. The tool flattens the top of the ground coffee before you tamp and can help you perform that action consistently every time. In this blog, I'll explain when that benefit truly becomes noticeable and what basics you should check first.
