    1 Adjustable Tamper and Coffee Distributor Combo

Why this tool helps make better coffee

Your espresso can run differently per brew when you tamp the ground coffee flat one time and unevenly another time. Especially tamping crookedly can cause the water to encounter different resistance in different places.

Varying pressure and a constantly changing workflow also make it difficult to figure out why an espresso tastes different. You then unknowingly change several things at once.

This combination tool supports two consecutive steps. The distributor side flattens the top of the ground coffee. Then you flip the tool over and use the tamper side to press the coffee horizontally.

Because the casing rests on the edge of the filter basket, it becomes easier to keep the tamper straight. With the adjustable depth, you can tailor the tool to the amount of coffee you normally use.

This eliminates one variable factor from your routine: tamping crookedly or deeper one time than another.

However, the tool cannot solve the following issues:

  • your grinder is set too fine or too coarse;
  • you use too much or too little coffee;
  • too much or too little espresso ends up in the cup;
  • your extraction time does not match your recipe;
  • your coffee beans are too old;
  • the coffee remains unevenly distributed throughout the filter basket.

More repeatability when distributing and tamping, without replacing the other extraction settings.

Who is this product suitable for?

Suitable for home baristas who:

  • use a matching filter basket for a 58.5 mm tool;
  • regularly notice that they tamp unevenly;
  • want to better replicate the tamping depth used;
  • want to combine a separate distributor and tamper;
  • want fewer loose tools around the espresso machine;
  • want to better control their fixed sequence of distributing and tamping;
  • use an E61 or 58.5 mm machine as designated by Barista-Essentials and have checked the size beforehand.

Who doesn't need this product?

This combination tool is not the first logical purchase if you already consistently and repeatably tamp straight and do not need a separate distributor function.

Also, if you primarily want certainty about a fixed tamp pressure, a calibrated click tampermight be more logical.

The click tamper is a different barista tool: it focuses on repeatable tamp pressure and does not automatically replace the distributor side of this combination tool.

Do not use this 58.5 mm version if:

  • your filter basket requires a different size;
  • 58 mm is prescribed by the manufacturer or supplier;
  • you assumed the size based solely on the brand name;
  • you expect the tool to correct an incorrect grind size, dosage, or espresso yield.

  • Compatibility

    This version has a specified size of 58.5 mm.

    Barista-Essentials lists the 58.5 mm variant for:

    • E61 machines;
    • ECM;
    • Rocket;
    • Rancilio;
    • La Marzocco;
    • Solis Triple Heat;
    • Sage The Oracle.

    The supplier also lists for the other variants:

    • 51 mm: De'Longhi Dedica and Solis Grind & Infuse Compact;
    • 53.3 mm: Sage Barista Express, Solis Grind & Infuse Pro and Breville Barista Express;
    • 58 mm: Quick Mill.

    A brand name alone is not sufficient to definitively determine the size. Different brew groups, filter baskets or model versions may be used within brands.

    Therefore, before ordering, please check:

    1. which size Barista-Essentials recommends for your exact model;
    2. what the inner diameter of your filter basket is;
    3. whether your current tamper or accessory is 58 mm or 58.5 mm;
    4. whether the filter basket has been replaced later by a different model.

    A 58 mm tool and a 58.5 mm tool are not automatically interchangeable. A tool that is too small leaves more space along the edge. A tool that is too large cannot properly sink into the filter basket.

    If your machine is not clearly listed in the size chart, please ask Barista-Essentials for confirmation before ordering.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

Geert-Jan de Baristaman has used this type of tamper and distributor combination during workshops and observed it at customer sites. His advice is based on those practical situations; it is not claimed that he has used this specific version extensively in private.

My advice:

This tool makes particular sense if you notice that you tamp one espresso straight and the next crooked. The rim-guided palm shape helps you place the tamper more horizontally on the filter basket. This allows you to remove one variable from your routine.

Do not expect the tool to independently prevent over-extraction or under-extraction. A crooked tamp can contribute to uneven water flow, but espresso is also determined by your grind size, the amount of coffee in the filter basket, the amount of espresso in the cup, the extraction time, and the freshness of the coffee.

If you already use a good technique where you tamp straight every time, the added value is smaller. If you primarily want to tamp with calibrated pressure every time, also check out the click-tamper from Barista-Essentials.

In all cases, first check whether 58.5 mm is indeed the correct size.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Adjust the depth to the amount of coffee you actually use every day. If you then significantly change the dosage, filter basket, or coffee, you should check whether the setting is still correct.

The Barista Shop may receive a commission when you order via the affiliate link. Always check the current product price, shipping costs, and any discounts with Barista-Essentials before payment.

Will this 58.5mm tamper fit my espresso machine?

Barista-Essentials specifies the 58.5 mm size for E61 machines, ECM, Rocket, Rancilio, La Marzocco, Solis Triple Heat, and Sage The Oracle.

This does not mean that every filter basket of every model is automatically the same. Check the exact machine model, Barista-Essentials' size chart, and the filter basket you are actually using.

If you are unsure between 58 and 58.5 mm, do not order based on an estimate. First ask Barista-Essentials for size confirmation.

How do I set the tamping depth of this combination tool?

When adjusting, use the same amount of coffee you normally use for your espresso.

Do not start with the deepest setting immediately. Adjust the tamper side deeper step by step until the coffee is actually pressed and the tool remains flush with the filter basket.

Then keep the setting the same as long as you use the same dose and the same filter basket. If you change the amount of coffee or the filter basket, recheck the setting.

The maximum tamping depth stated by Barista-Essentials is 14 mm.

When is this tool not my first logical purchase?

This combination tool is not the first choice if you consistently tamp straight and repeatably, and therefore don't need a distribution tool.

Even if your espresso varies mainly because you don't use a coffee scale, don't control your grind size, or are working with very old coffee, you should address those fundamentals first.

If you primarily want a consistent tamping pressure, a calibrated click tamper might be more logical:https://debaristashop.nl/products/gekalibreerde-klik-tamper-espresso
