☕ Can I use any type of coffee bean in my espresso machine?
Share
In my barista workshops, I regularly get asked which coffee beans someone should actually buy for their espresso machine. One package says 100% Arabica, another espresso blend, and then you see countries, strength ratings, and light, medium, or dark roast. If you're just starting, such a package tells you a lot without really explaining what to do with it.
The good news is that you can make espresso with many different coffee beans. The more important question is which bean suits the taste you're looking for, and the capabilities of your espresso machine and grinder.
In this buying guide, I will therefore show you what I look at during workshops: origin, roast, roast date, Arabica or Robusta, and the choice between single origin and espresso blend. This will allow you to better predict what you're buying before you pull your first espresso shot.
