What can CBD add to your coffee ritual?

CBD affects various systems involved in stress, sensory processing, recovery, and sleep. Human research shows positive effects on stress and anxiety symptoms, while integrative practical studies also report improvements in calmness and sleep. Combined with coffee, this can feel like a combination of alertness and more inner peace for some people, although the experience varies by person and product.

For many people, a first cup of coffee is more than just caffeine. It's a ritualistic moment to wake up, calmly start the day, and contemplate what lies ahead. For some coffee drinkers, CBD fits into that same ritual.

The combination is often described as feeling awake and focused, with less physical restlessness. This idea is not without foundation. CBD influences systems involved in inhibiting an overly strong stress response. However, it doesn't work like a simple on-off switch. The type of CBD, the amount used, the strength of your coffee, and your personal sensitivity all determine how you experience it.

CBD works more broadly than just relaxation

CBD stands for cannabidiol and is a natural substance derived from the hemp plant. It does not make you high and works differently than THC. CBD influences multiple signaling pathways involved in stress regulation, mood, pain perception, and recovery.

Research into Rest and Stress

The influence of CBD on anxiety and stress is among the most researched applications outside of epilepsy. Particularly in cases of tension arising from a specific stressful situation, positive results have been observed.

Can CBD help reduce tension and increase calmness?

There have been several human studies in which CBD had a measurable effect on tension and anxiety. In a randomized public speaking study, participants with social anxiety experienced less anxiety, discomfort, and cognitive blockage after taking CBD. A 2024 meta-analysis found a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms across eight studies, although the number of participants was still limited.

A larger randomized study with 178 participants also found improvements in anxiety, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality with the use of a specific nanodispersible CBD formulation.

The autonomic nervous system is also interesting. A 2025 study found an increase in parasympathetic activity, which is the part of the nervous system associated with rest and recovery. The context of that study was different from a normal coffee routine, but the outcome supports the idea that CBD can influence physical stress regulation.

CBD is also used by people who want to sleep better. The outcomes vary per study, but positive changes in sleep and recovery are reported, especially in integrative practice data.

Can CBD help with relaxation and better sleep?

CBD is not automatically a sedative that makes you instantly drowsy. Its possible influence on sleep can also arise indirectly by reducing tension, worrying, or physical restlessness.

A practical study in integrative psychiatry followed adults who used CBD in addition to their existing treatment. In the first month, anxiety scores decreased in 79.2 percent of participants. Sleep scores initially improved in 66.7 percent, although sleep results varied more thereafter. It was a practical study without a placebo group, but the results do provide insight into what was observed within an integrative treatment environment.

Observational research among users of so-called artisanal CBD products also reported better sleep, fewer psychiatric complaints, and a higher perceived quality of life. Such studies do not prove a fixed effect for every user, but they do show why CBD is often associated with rest, recovery, and sleep in practice.

What happens when you combine CBD with caffeine?

CBD doesn't simply cancel out caffeine. In an initial study where 54 regular coffee drinkers were given caffeine with different amounts of CBD, CBD did not significantly alter the directly experienced effects of caffeine. No unexpected negative effects of the combination were observed during that short study period.

Another pharmacokinetic study showed that prolonged use of a high pharmaceutical CBD dose could slow down the breakdown of caffeine. As a result, caffeine remained in the body longer. This research dose is not comparable to a few drops of consumer oil, but it does show that CBD and caffeine can biologically influence each other.

The experience of "awake, but calmer" is therefore conceivable, especially when CBD influences an individual's stress response. However, it is not a fixed outcome. The strength of your coffee, sleep, diet, and sensitivity to caffeine remain important.

How do you practically add CBD to coffee?

CBD oil does not dissolve well in black coffee. You often see the oil floating as drops on the surface. In a cappuccino or latte, the oil distributes more easily through the milk and fats, although the drink still needs to be stirred well.

First, make your espresso and then froth your milk. Only add the CBD oil when the drink is ready, and stir gently. It is better not to add the oil to your milk pitcher before frothing, as greasy residues can stick to the pitcher and the steam wand.

Use the same coffee recipe every day and only change the CBD. Then, for several days, note down:

  • how much coffee you drank;
  • at what time you drank the coffee;
  • how alert you felt;
  • whether you experienced physical restlessness;
  • how you slept later in the day and in the evening.

Check the CBD product's concentration per drop, its composition, and a recent laboratory analysis. If you are taking medication, individually check whether an interaction is known.

I have another question.

Is CBD in coffee an interesting morning routine?

CBD has demonstrably influenced multiple systems involved in stress, anxiety, sensory processing, and recovery. Clinical studies show positive results for specific forms of tension and anxiety. Additionally, integrative practice studies report improvements in calmness, sleep, and perceived well-being.

That doesn't mean every cup of CBD coffee feels the same. The type of CBD, the amount of caffeine, your sleep, and your personal sensitivity together determine the outcome. If you want to explore the combination, it's best to do so with a consistent coffee preparation and one controlled change at a time.

This is where De Barista Shop comes in. I help you understand what the coffee beans, grind, dosage, and espresso extraction do in your cup. From that foundation, you can much better assess what an addition like CBD truly adds to your routine.

☕ CBD in coffee: potential benefits, effects, and usage

Coffee and CBD appear to work in two different directions at first glance. Caffeine helps you wake up and become alert, while CBD is often used for calm, relaxation, and a more balanced feeling. That's precisely why more and more people are finding the combination interesting.

I'm Geert-Jan, the Barista Man. When someone wants to add something to coffee, I first look at what's happening in the cup and what someone experiences in their daily routine. CBD is interesting in this regard because it isn't linked to just one receptor or one bodily function. Research is examining its influence on the endocannabinoid system, the nervous system, stress, anxiety, and sleep, among other things.

In this blog, I'll explain what CBD can potentially do, why some people experience the combination as alert but calmer, and how to practically add CBD oil to black coffee, cappuccino, or latte.
