Measuring cup 58.5 mm black – keep a grip on your ground portion

Not every portafilter feels comfortable under the coffee grinder. This black 58.5 mm stainless steel dosing cup gives you a separate place to collect the ground coffee. Weigh the dose if you wish, and then transfer it to a suitable container. Geert-Jan explains when this intermediate step is useful and what to pay attention to when flipping it over.

Why this helps make better coffee

You hold the filter holder under the grinder, but some of the ground coffee falls down the side. Or the filter holder doesn't sit comfortably under the spout, so you have to keep adjusting it while grinding.

A separate collection cup gives you a different order: first grind into the cup, then put the coffee in the filter basket. This also allows you to check the amount of ground coffee before moving on.

This dosing cup is made of stainless steel and has a rounded interior. You catch the ground coffee in it and use the matching rim when transferring it to your filter basket.

The cup does not grind, weigh, or dose itself. You choose in advance how many beans you want to grind and check the amount with a scale. The advantage lies in catching and transferring; not in an automatically better espresso recipe.

Who is this suitable for?

For those who weigh out a single dose of beans at a time and grind it, also known as single dosing. A dosing cup can be useful if the filter basket does not fit conveniently under your grinder or if you want to weigh the ground coffee.

The black 58.5 mm version is intended for someone with a matching filter basket who doesn't mind transferring the coffee one extra time. See whether this extra step makes your coffee station more organized.

For whom is this not necessary?

Does it grind directly into your portafilter neatly, and can you easily check the amount? Then a separate cup is not strictly necessary. It also comes with an extra part that you need to empty and keep clean.

If you are looking for a cup that activates a built-in Sage grinder, this is not the version specifically designed for that. Barista Essentials has a different model for that purpose; do not choose it just because the cup appears to fit under the spout.

  • Compatibility

The supplier states that the 58.5 mm version is suitable for portafilter baskets from brands including ECM, Expobar, La Marzocco, Gaggia, Rancilio, and Quick Mill. Compare the rim with your own filter basket. Also check the space under the grinder: a suitable basket size does not guarantee compatibility with the grinder holder.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

With a dosing cup, I would look at the entire process. Can you easily place it under the grinder, empty it easily, and set it comfortably on your grinder? That tells you more than just whether the cup matches your machine.

My advice:

My advice: choose this 58.5 mm cup if grinding directly into your container is inconvenient and the fit with the container is correct. Practice transferring it slowly at first, so you can discover how to hold the parts best.

If a lot of coffee keeps sticking, also investigate what your grinder is doing. A cup does not change the static charge of ground coffee by itself. Keep the goal simple: know how much coffee you have and get it into your container as neatly as possible.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

Catch the coffee grounds before you distribute and tamp

Usage:

Geert-Jan's tip:

Use a coffee scale to check the amount of ground coffee. Place the empty cup on it and press zero before you start grinding. This way you read the weight of the coffee, not the weight of the cup and coffee together.

Start the transfer over a clear area of the countertop. If the connection doesn't feel comfortable, stop and check the size instead of trying to get the coffee in with extra shaking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Doseerbeker 58,5 mm zwart op een lichte achtergrond

Does 58.5 mm fit automatically on any 58 mm filter basket?

No. Check how the edge of your container fits onto the cup. A replacement container may also fit differently. If in doubt, ask for confirmation regarding your specific combination.

Does the dosing cup weigh my coffee?

No. For this, you use a coffee scale. Set the empty cup to zero before weighing the ground coffee.

Does this cup fit the portafilter of a Sage Barista Express?

This is not the cup specially designed for the Sage grinder holder. For this type of connection, choose the model offered by the supplier for that machine; do not judge solely on appearance.

Do I need a dosing cup if I don't grind beans per serving?

That way you can keep ground coffee separate, but see if it helps you. If grinding directly into your filter holder works well, the extra cup and transferring might be unnecessary.

How do I keep the cup clean?

Remove coffee residue after use. Wipe the cup with a slightly damp barista cloth if necessary and let it dry completely. Use a coffee brush for loose dry grounds on the worktop; do not scrub the black finish.
