Private barista workshop on your Magister espresso machine

A Magister home barista workshop is intended for home baristas who want to learn how to better use their own espresso machine and coffee grinder. Geert-Jan will come to your home and assess how your Magister, coffee grinder, coffee beans, and daily routine align with each other.

You will not only learn which settings work at that moment. You will also practice how to evaluate an espresso yourself, adjust the coffee grinder finer or coarser, and check what an adjustment does to the flow time and taste. If you have milk ready, you can also practice frothing milk and basic latte art.

You choose between Barista Focusof approximately 90 minutes for a maximum of two main topics and Barista Masterof approximately 120 minutes for the full training. After your request, you will receive a personalized total price and available times.

You have a Magister, but your espresso keeps changing

A good semi-automatic espresso machine does not automatically produce the same espresso every time. The coffee beans, grinder, dosage, amount of espresso, extraction time, and method must all be harmonized. If you don't know which setting to change, you can easily keep trying without understanding why the taste varies.

  • Your espresso is running too fast or too slow

One shot tastes sour or watery and the next bitter or heavy. You change the grind setting, amount of coffee, or brewing time, but don't know which adjustment was actually needed.

  • You can't reliably adjust the coffee grinder

New coffee beans and changes in freshness affect how quickly the water flows through the coffee. You lack a consistent method to find a usable grind setting again.

  • Milk, beans, and cleaning remain separate issues

Your milk becomes too frothy, too hot, or barely foamy. At the same time, you're not sure which beans suit your taste and which cleaning procedures are needed daily or periodically.

Can I take a barista workshop on my Magister?

Yes, if your Magister is a functioning semi-automatic espresso machine and you use a functioning integrated or separate coffee grinder. Geert-Jan will conduct the workshop at your home, using the equipment, coffee beans, milk, and coffee routine you use daily. The workshop is a usage and coffee training session, not a technical repair service.

Who is this workshop for?

Why training on your own Magister yields better results

Every combination of espresso machine, coffee grinder, portafilter, and coffee bean reacts differently. A grind setting or recipe that works well on another machine may not produce the same result at home. The dosage, amount of espresso, extraction time, pre-heating, steam power, and cleaning also influence what you ultimately taste.

During the workshop, you will see directly what an adjustment does to your own Magister. You will weigh the coffee and espresso, keep track of the extraction time, compare different shots, and learn when the coffee grinder needs to be adjusted finer or coarser. This means you won't just be memorizing a recipe. You will build a method that allows you to re-calibrate later on when you use different beans or notice that your espresso starts to run differently.

You'll not only learn which setting works today, but also how to determine the next logical adjustment yourself later on.

This is how you get more control over your Magister

The workshop starts with your own equipment and specific questions. Then you'll learn step-by-step how to measure, taste, adjust, and combine these actions into a usable coffee routine.

1. We'll examine your machine, mill, and specific needs

The workshop begins with a brief inventory. Geert-Jan will check which Magister model and coffee grinder you use, how long you've been using them, and what challenges you encounter. Coffee beans, milk, tools, and current work methods will also be taken into account. If you have a clear question or specific problem, Barista Focus, with a maximum of two main components, might be suitable. If you want to go through the complete route, Barista Master would be more logical. This way, the available time is used for topics relevant to your situation.

2. You measure, taste, and adjust the coffee grinder

You work on the Magister yourself. You use a fixed amount of ground coffee, measure how much espresso goes into the cup, and track how long the water runs through the coffee. Then you taste the result and learn to determine which adjustment makes sense. Sometimes the coffee grinder needs to be finer or coarser. In other cases, the problem lies with the amount of coffee, the espresso yield, the beans used, or the execution of an action. By comparing multiple shots, you see and taste what each change does.

3. You'll build a repeatable coffee routine

Frequently asked questions about the Magister barista workshop

For which Magister espresso machines is the workshop suitable?

The workshop is suitable for a working semi-automatic Magister espresso machine with a working integrated or separate coffee grinder. Models such as the ES30, ES40, MS30, and Stella Professional may be suitable, depending on the version and existing equipment. For frothing milk, a working steam wand is required. Fully automatic machines, capsule machines, pod machines, machines that are exclusively used with pre-ground coffee, and defective machines or coffee grinders are not suitable. The workshop is a coffee training and not a repair service.

Should I choose Barista Focus or Barista Master?

Barista Focuslasts approximately 90 minutes and is intended for a specific learning need. You choose a maximum of two main components, for example espresso extraction and grinder adjustment, possibly combined with milk frothing. Barista Masterlasts approximately 120 minutes and covers all three main components: coffee beans and cleaning, espresso extraction and grinder adjustment, milk frothing and basic latte art. Business training courses are custom-made.

What does the private workshop cost on my Magister?

We're here to make things easy for you! Your first step to getting the right size is checking out our size chart. It's got all the info you need to measure yourself and find your perfect fit. We also provide extra details on each product page, like the model's size and fit descriptions. If you're still not sure, our team is always happy to help. Just send us a message!

What do I need to prepare for the workshop?

Ensure you have a working Magister espresso machine and a working coffee grinder. Preferably, prepare at least 250 grams of your own coffee beans. For frothing milk, you will need chilled milk and your own milk pitcher. Additionally, provide a suitable tamper, cleaning cloths, espresso or cappuccino cups, approximately two square meters of workspace, an electrical outlet, and a sink with running water. If you don't have suitable coffee beans, the provided Aficionado can be used.

Can I participate with multiple people or book a business training?

Yes. For private workshops, one to five participants fall within the same workshop price. The duration remains approximately 90 or 120 minutes, meaning more participants results in less individual practice time per person. For more than five participants, an office, hospitality, or team training, a customised setup is usually more logical. For this, please see the on-site business barista training.

I have another question...

Personal coffee training on your own espresso machine and grinder

A Magister espresso machine gives you a lot of direct influence over the brewing process. You grind the coffee, dose the filter basket, tamp, start the extraction, and decide when the shot is ready. This freedom also means that small differences in coffee beans, grind setting, amount of coffee, and method become visible and noticeable.

During the private workshop, you will therefore not only learn how to use a button or setting. You will learn to evaluate the Magister, coffee grinder, and coffee beans as a single system. If the espresso runs too fast, you first examine what you have dosed, how much espresso ended up in the cup, and how long it took. Then you decide whether the coffee grinder needs to be finer or if another adjustment is more logical.

On the page about the private in-home barista workshopyou will find the complete overview of workshop variants, pricing structure, preparation, and aftercare. If you primarily need help with the interplay between your grinder and machine, also check out the explanation on adjusting your coffee grinder and espresso machine at home.

If you're not yet ready to book a workshop, you can start with Espresso Under Control for free. If you work with a Magister in a professional environment or want to train multiple employees, check out the business coffee training at your own workplace.
