☕ Spring tamper | Calibrated | 58mm | Black

☕ Spring tamper | Calibrated | 58mm | Black

This black 58mm spring tamper clicks when you have applied 12 kg of pressure. The wide guide rests on the edge of the portafilter, ensuring you tamp the coffee straighter. This is especially helpful when multiple people use the same machine or when your tamping pressure varies per espresso. Before purchasing, check if 58mm fits your filter basket. You can buy the product at Barista Essentials.

Why this tool helps make better coffee

With a regular tamper, you press the coffee harder one time than another. When multiple people use the same espresso machine, these differences often become even greater. The tamper can also be slightly askew in the filter basket. The water will then more easily find a path through the less firmly pressed part of the coffee.

As a result, the same coffee can extract differently from the same machine. One espresso runs faster, the other slower, even though you think you've done everything the same.

This click tamper assists with two operations.

The tamper clicks when the set pressure point of 12 kg is reached. This means you don't have to guess whether you've pressed harder or softer this time.

The wide guide rests on the rim of the portafilter. This allows the tamper to move straighter down, reducing the chance of pressing the coffee deeper on one side than on the other.

The tool only controls the tamping. It cannot solve issues such as:

  • the coffee grinder being set too fine or too coarse;
  • you using too much or too little coffee;
  • the ground coffee being uneven in the basket before tamping;
  • too much or too little espresso ending up in the cup;
  • the water flowing through the coffee too quickly or almost not at all.

You tamp the coffee in a more consistent way each time: with the same click and straighter in the portafilter.

Who is this product suitable for?

Suitable for home baristas who:

  • use a filter basket into which a 58mm tamper actually fits;
  • use a Quick Mill machine that fits according to the current size information;
  • cannot consistently feel if they are pressing the coffee equally hard each time;
  • notice that their regular tamper is often crooked;
  • use the same espresso machine with multiple people;
  • already have a reasonable handle on the basics of brewing and want to further improve their tamping;
  • want to add a consistent action to their daily coffee routine.

Who doesn't need this product?

Not the first logical choice when:

  • 58 mm does not fit in the filter basket used;
  • your machine or filter basket requires a tamper of 58.5 mm, 53.3 mm, 51 mm, or another size;
  • you already tamp straight and with approximately the same pressure every time with a regular tamper;
  • you are the only user and notice little difference between your tamping motions;
  • your espresso runs through too fast or too slow;
  • you do not yet know how many grams of coffee you use;
  • you do not yet check how much espresso ends up in the cup;
  • you expect a new tamper to fix a poorly calibrated coffee grinder;
  • you use a fully automatic or capsule machine where you do not tamp the coffee yourself.

  • Compatibility

    This version has a 58 mm tamping surface. Barista Essentials specifies this size for Quick Mill machines.

    Do not buy a tamper just because "58 mm group head" is written somewhere on your machine. The internal diameter of the filter basket where you actually tamp the coffee is the determining factor. For many other machines with a 58 mm group head, a 58.5 mm tamper is used.

    Before purchasing, please check:

    1. The size of your current well-fitting tamper.
    2. Whether a 58 mm tamper fits freely in the filter basket you are using.
    3. Whether the tamper gets stuck against the inner wall.
    4. Whether Barista Essentials lists your exact machine or model in their current size chart.
    5. Whether you are using an original filter basket or a precision basket purchased later, as the internal dimensions may differ.

    Are you unsure between 58 and 58.5 mm? Then first measure the filter basket or ask Barista Essentials for size advice. Do not purchase solely based on the brand of the espresso machine.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

Geert-Jan de Baristaman has regularly used this click tamper himself during private at-home barista workshops. He uses it on the participant's espresso machine and filter basket. He also frequently sees that home baristas have already bought this type of tamper themselves and use it daily.

My advice:

This click tamper is especially useful when you notice that tamping differs per person or per espresso. I often see this in households where multiple people use the same espresso machine. One person tamps harder, another softer, and someone else holds the tamper slightly angled.

The click and the guide eliminate some of these differences. This makes it easier to achieve roughly the same tamping motion with every espresso.

I would not buy this tamper as a first solution if your espresso still runs out of the machine too quickly or too slowly. First, check:

  • how many grams of coffee you use in the filter basket;
  • how fine or coarse the coffee grinder is set;
  • how much espresso ends up in the cup;
  • how long the water takes for that.

When that basic foundation is correct, a click tamper can help to minimize the remaining differences during tamping. So, see it as an improvement on a good foundation, not as a replacement for that foundation.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Geert-Jan's tip:

First, distribute the ground coffee evenly over the entire filter basket. The click tamper can press the coffee straight, but it cannot correct a large pile of coffee on one side of the basket.

Do I buy this spring tamper at The Barista Shop or Barista Essentials?

The Barista Shop provides explanations, practical advice, and assistance in choosing the right size. The actual purchase takes place at Barista Essentials. You pay there and receive the order confirmation from Barista Essentials. Stock, shipping, delivery, returns, warranty claims, complaints, and any right of withdrawal are also handled by Barista Essentials and according to their current terms and conditions.

Do I pay more when I order through an affiliate link?

No, the product price Barista Essentials shows you does not change. Barista Shop may receive a commission when you order through the link. Always check the merchant page for current prices, stock, and conditions.

Does this 58mm click tamper fit every machine with a 58mm group head?

No. The size of the brew group and the size of the filter basket are not always the same. Barista Essentials refers to this 58mm version for Quick Mill machines. For many other machines with a 58mm brew group, a 58.5mm tamper is used. Therefore, check the filter basket you are actually using or consult the current size chart from Barista Essentials.

What should I do when the tamper has clicked?

Stop pressing once you've reached the click point. Then remove loose coffee grounds from the rim of the portafilter, twist the portafilter into the machine and start the espresso. Pressing extra hard multiple times is not necessary.

When is this click tamper not the first logical purchase?

Not when your espresso runs much too fast or much too slow and you don't yet know how much coffee and water you are using. First, adjust the grinder properly and check how many grams of coffee go into the filter, how much espresso ends up in the cup, and how long that takes. The tamper helps with more even tamping, but cannot correct these basic settings for you.
