Why this tool helps make better coffee

During workshops, Geert-Jan de Baristaman regularly hears that home baristas don't know how much pressure to use when tamping. Online advice varies from light pressing to 15 or 20 kilograms. This makes tamping an estimation, and you don't know if you're using the same force and angle for each shot.

This tamper clicks when a tamping pressure of 12 kg is reached. The overlapping guide rim rests on the edge of the portafilter during tamping. This causes the tamping surface to move straighter down and makes you less dependent on your feel for both force and hand position.

The tool thus controls two parts of the execution: a repeatable pressure moment and a straighter tamping motion. Dosing, grind size, coffee distribution, yield, and extraction time remain separate variables that you must set correctly yourself.

More repeatability during tamping, allowing you to more accurately assess other extraction variables.

Who is this product suitable for?

Suitable for home baristas who:

  • use a filter basket that genuinely fits a 58.5 mm tamper;
  • are unsure about how much tamping pressure they are using;
  • notice that they frequently place their regular tamper crookedly;
  • want to make their tamping motion more repeatable;
  • already understand the basics of dosing, grind size, yield, and extraction time;
  • want to eliminate one variable from their puck preparation.

Who doesn't need this product?

Not the first logical choice when:

  • 58.5 mm does not fit the filter basket being used;
  • you are already tamping straight and consistently with a regular tamper;
  • you expect the tamper to correct an incorrect grind size, dose, or extraction ratio;
  • you are not yet monitoring your espresso extraction based on input, output, and flow time;
  • you mainly buy new tools because your shots are inconsistent, without first investigating the basics of espresso extraction;
  • you use a super-automatic, capsule machine, or other machine without a filter basket that requires manual tamping.

  • Compatibility

    This version has a tamping surface of 58.5 mm. Barista Essentials states that this size is suitable for most E61 setups and mentions brands such as Bezzera, Rocket, and Rancilio as examples.

    However, this does not mean that every model from these brands is automatically suitable. Machines, original filter baskets, and precision filters purchased later may have different internal dimensions.

    Before purchasing, please check:

    1. the internal diameter of the filter basket you actually use;
    2. the size of your current well-fitting tamper;
    3. whether Barista Essentials lists your exact machine and model in their current size chart;
    4. whether a 58.5 mm tamper can move freely in the basket without getting stuck along the wall.

    If you are in doubt between 58 and 58.5 mm, do not purchase solely based on the nominal group head size. Check the filter basket or ask Barista Essentials for size advice.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

Geert-Jan de Baristaman has used this calibrated tamper himself multiple times. According to him, the most important practical advantage is the combination of a fixed pressure point and the guide rim that rests on the portafilter. This means you need to rely less on feel to determine how much force you use, and it becomes easier to move the tamping surface straight down.

My advice:

This tamper is a logical refinement once you have the basics of espresso under control but are still unsure about tamping pressure or frequently tamp crookedly. It makes one action more repeatable.

The tamper does not solve incorrect grind size, varying dosage, poor coffee distribution, or an incorrect extraction ratio. If you don't yet know how much coffee you use, how much espresso you get from the filter, and how long that takes, that's where the biggest gains are to be made first.

Therefore, don't see this spring tamper as a fix for bad espresso, but as a tool with which you can reduce an additional execution variable on top of a controlled extraction routine.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

Geert-Jan's tip:

Place the portafilter flat and stable before tamping. The guiding edge helps with straight tamping, but works most reliably when the portafilter itself is not held at an angle.

First, understand the variables that determine your espresso

A click-tamper makes tamping more repeatable, but extraction control starts with dosage, yield, and shot time. This module helps you avoid using a new tool as a replacement for the basics.

Do I buy this spring tamper at De Barista Shop or Barista Essentials?

You use De Barista Shop for explanations, practical advice, and size selection. The actual purchase takes place at Barista Essentials. Payment, order confirmation, stock, shipping, delivery, returns, warranty claims, complaints, and any right of withdrawal are handled through Barista Essentials and according to their current terms and conditions.

Do I pay more when I order through an affiliate link?

No. According to the current affiliate setup, the partner link does not change the selling price for you. The Barista Shop may receive a commission when you order via the link. The current price, stock, and conditions are always determined by Barista Essentials.

Will a 58.5mm tamper fit every E61 espresso machine?

No. Barista Essentials states that 58.5mm is suitable for most E61 setups, but machines and filter baskets can vary. Check the internal size of the basket you actually use and, if in doubt, consult Barista Essentials' current size chart.

How do I use the click mechanism on this tamper?

Place the portafilter stably and upright, position the tamper flat in the filter basket and press down carefully until it clicks. The click indicates that the set pressure point of 12 kg has been reached. It is not necessary to press extra hard or multiple times.

When is this tamper not the logical first purchase?

Not when you are primarily struggling with an incorrect grind size, inconsistent dosing, or an unknown extraction ratio. Also not when 58.5 mm does not fit or when you already work straight and consistently with a regular tamper. First, understand the basics of espresso extraction and then determine if tamp pressure is truly the variable you want to reduce.
