Why this tool helps make better coffee

Many home baristas hesitate while tamping: Am I pressing too hard, too lightly, or unevenly? This becomes even more difficult when multiple people in one household use the same espresso machine. One person pushes firmly, another gently, and afterwards, it's hard to judge why the espresso tastes different or extracts differently.

This click tamper helps to keep the tamping pressure consistent. Barista Essentials states that the tamper clicks at 12 kg of pressure. Additionally, thanks to the rim that rests on the portafilter, the tamper helps you to tamp straighter. This largely removes the variable "how hard and how straight did I tamp?" from your routine.

That doesn't mean the tamper automatically corrects your espresso. If you use too much or too little ground coffee, your grinder is set too fine or too coarse, the coffee is unevenly distributed, or you don't know how much espresso ends up in your cup, the extraction will still vary. This tamper mainly helps when you already want to control the basics more seriously.

More consistency and repeatability in tamping, allowing you to more precisely search for the real cause of inconsistent espresso.

Who is this product suitable for?

Suitable for home baristas with a matching 53.3 mm filter basket who are unsure about tamping pressure, have difficulty tamping straight, or use a supplied tamper that feels uncomfortable. It also makes sense when multiple people at home use the same espresso machine and you want to prevent everyone from tamping differently.

Who doesn't need this product?

Not suitable if your filter basket doesn't require a 53.3 mm tamper size. Also not the first logical purchase if you don't yet know how many grams of coffee you use, how to adjust your grind size, or how much espresso you want in the cup. First, the basics of espresso extraction need to be mastered.

  • Compatibility

This variant is intended for a 53.3 mm filter basket. Barista Essentials states that 53.3 mm is suitable for Sage, Solis, and Breville machines. Always check your own filter basket or portafilter size before ordering.

The correct size is crucial. If the tamper is too small, you will primarily compress the center of the coffee puck, leaving loose coffee along the edges. Water can then flow through more easily. If the tamper is too large, it won't fit properly into the filter basket and you won't be able to use it normally.

If your machine is not clearly mentioned, first measure the inner diameter of your filter basket or check the size chart/compatibility information from Barista Essentials.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

Geert-Jan the Barista Man has used this click tamper regularly and also often sees it being used by home baristas during private at-home barista workshops.

My advice:

This click tamper is useful when you want to eliminate guesswork from your tamping pressure and crooked tamping. It makes your routine calmer, especially if multiple people use the same machine or if you often doubt how much force to apply.

However, don't buy it as a substitute for basic control. If you're still guessing your dosage, don't know what finer or coarser grinding does, or don't measure how much espresso ends up in your cup, then the solution lies more in extraction control than in a new tool. First, understand what you're correcting, then refine with a click tamper.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

Divide + Tamp + Check extraction

Geert-Jan's tip:

Use the click as a fixed end point. This way you don't have to guess every time if you've pressed hard enough.

Do I buy this spring tamper at The Barista Shop or Barista Essentials?

You are reading the advice on De Barista Shop, but the purchase is processed through Barista Essentials. After clicking the order button, you pay for and receive the product through Barista Essentials. Shipping, returns, warranty, and any cancellations also go through Barista Essentials and according to their current terms and conditions.

Will I pay more if I order through the affiliate link?

No, you do not pay more. The Barista Shop may receive a commission through this affiliate link; always check the current price on the Barista Essentials page before ordering.

Will this 53.3mm click tamper fit my Sage, Solis, or Breville?

Barista Essentials states that the 53.3 mm size is suitable for Sage, Solis and Breville machines. However, always check your own filter basket. If the tamper is too small, coffee will remain untamped along the edges. If it is too large, it will not fit properly into the filter basket.

What does the click do during tamping?

The click indicates that you have reached the fixed pressure point. For this tamper, Barista Essentials states a pressure of 12 kg. Stop after the click, so that your routine remains repeatable and you don't end up tamping differently each time anyway.

When is this click tamper not the first logical purchase?

If you're not yet measuring how many grams of coffee you're using, don't know how to adjust your grind size, or aren't checking how much espresso ends up in your cup, then you first need to understand the basics of extraction. A click tamper only truly helps when you consciously want to remove one variable - tamping pressure - from your routine.
