Why this tool helps make better coffee

Many home baristas immediately think of the grind, the beans, or the machine when their espresso is inconsistent. But an unevenly tamped coffee bed can also lead to channeling, skewed extraction, and shots that run well one time and are too fast or watery the next. Especially with machines like Sage, Solis, DeLonghi, or E61 machines, you often see that a tamper that doesn't quite fit or an uneven tamp makes the routine unnecessarily unstable.

A good tamper won't magically fix bad espresso, but it will help you stabilize one important variable: the tamping of your coffee grounds. If the tamper fits your portafilter basket well and feels comfortable in your hand, it will be easier to tamp straight, flat, and consistently. This reduces the chance of water channeling through weak spots in the puck.

More control over your puck preparation, less chance of channeling, and a more consistent base for better espresso.

Who doesn't need this product?

This product is less important if you are not yet using fresh coffee, your grind size varies greatly, or you are not yet working with a consistent dosage. In that case, start with your basic routine first.

    Compatibility

These coffee beans are particularly suitable if you are looking for a flavour profile that matches your brewing method. For espresso, a medium to medium-dark roast often works better than a very light filter roast, especially if you are using a semi-automatic machine at home. Pay attention to the roast date, flavour description and whether the coffee is intended for espresso, filter or both.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

This tamper is especially interesting if you want to work more consistently with your puck preparation. It doesn't automatically make your espresso better, but it does help to stabilize one variable: tamping straight and level. Especially if you are currently using a lightweight standard tamper or one that doesn't quite fit, this is a logical upgrade.

My advice:

Especially if you currently work with a light standard tamper or one that doesn't fit quite right, this is a logical upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy this tamper at De Barista Shop?

No. The Barista Shop recommends this tamper, but the purchase is made through Barista-Essentials.

Do I pay more through this affiliate link?

No. You don't pay more. The Barista Shop may receive a commission if you order through this link.

Does this tamper fit my Sage machine?

Always check the size of your portafilter. Many Sage machines use a 54mm portafilter, which often uses a 53.3mm tamper.

Does a good tamper fix bad espresso?

Not automatically. A tamper mainly helps to work more consistently. Your grind, dosage, distribution, and freshness remain at least as important.

When should I not buy this tamper as my first one?

If you're not yet using fresh beans, a consistent dose, or a good grind, I would start there first.
