Private at-home barista workshop in Castricum

A barista workshop at home in Castricum is intended for home baristas who not only want to use their own espresso machine, but also want to understand it. Geert-Jan de Baristaman comes to you and works with your functioning semi-automatic espresso machine, integrated or separate coffee grinder, and preferably the coffee beans you normally use at home.

During the workshop, you will see what changes when you adjust the coffee grinder to be finer or coarser, use a different amount of coffee, or let more or less espresso flow into the cup. You will taste the differences and learn which adjustment corresponds to which problem. Depending on the chosen workshop, coffee beans, cleaning, milk frothing, and basic latte art can also be covered.

This way, you practice not on an unfamiliar training machine, but precisely on the equipment you will then continue to use independently.

You have a good espresso machine, but the results are inconsistent

A semi-automatic espresso machine does not automatically produce the same espresso every day. Small differences in coffee beans, grind, amount of coffee and extraction time can clearly affect the taste. If you don't know where to start, you'll quickly change multiple settings at once.

  • Your espresso tastes good one time and completely different the next

For example, one shot may suddenly run too fast and taste watery or sour, while the next one runs slowly and becomes bitter. During the workshop, you will learn which signals you can use to make targeted adjustments.

  • You keep grinding the coffee without knowing when it's right

New coffee beans or a different roast date might require a different grind setting. Therefore, you won't learn one fixed setting by heart, but a method that allows you to re-adjust the coffee grinder yourself later.

  • Frothing milk, coffee beans, and maintenance still feel like separate topics

Perhaps your milk has large bubbles, you're unsure which beans to buy, or you don't know exactly what to clean regularly. In the extensive workshop, these elements are brought together into a clear routine that suits your way of making coffee.

Why practicing on your own machine yields better results

An espresso machine, coffee grinder, and coffee bean together form a single system. The grind setting that works well on one grinder says little about your own coffee grinder. Also, the amount of coffee in your filter basket, the amount of espresso in the cup, the time the water runs through the coffee, and the power of your steam wand all differ per setup.

That's why during the workshop, you'll work with the equipment that will then stay in your kitchen. You'll make multiple espressos, measure what happens, taste the differences, and adjust one thing at a time, step by step. This way, you'll immediately see the effect of a change.

The most important result isn't just one delicious espresso during the workshop. You'll learn a method that you can use later to adjust yourself when you buy different beans or notice your espresso changing.

You don't just learn what setting works now, but how to find the next correct adjustment yourself later.

This is how you learn step by step to get more out of your own espresso machine

The exact content depends on whether you choose Barista Focus or Barista Master, but the approach remains practical: first understand what's happening with you, then make targeted adjustments, and finally ensure you can repeat it yourself.

1. We start with your equipment, coffee, and routine

Geert-Jan first observes how you currently use your espresso machine and coffee grinder. How long have you had the machine? What coffee beans do you use? What challenges are you facing? Perhaps your espresso runs too fast, the taste remains sour, or you can't get the grinder properly adjusted. Instead of randomly changing settings right away, the first step is to clarify where the problem likely originates. Barista Master also covers how origin, Arabica and Robusta, roasting, freshness, and bean storage influence what you ultimately taste. Cleaning and maintenance are also included.

2. You weigh, measure, taste and adjust the coffee grinder

After that, you will start making espresso yourself. You will look at, among other things, how much coffee you use, how much espresso ultimately ends up in the cup, and how long that takes. If the espresso runs too fast, you will learn why a finer grind might be logical. If it runs too slowly, you will look at a coarser setting and other possible causes. You will pull multiple shots and taste what the changes do. This way, the coffee grinder will no longer be a knob you turn at random, but a tool you learn to use purposefully.

3. You combine everything into a routine that you can repeat at home

Frequently asked questions about a barista workshop in Castricum

Which espresso machine is the workshop suitable for?

You need a working semi-automatic espresso machine with a working integrated coffee grinder or a separate coffee grinder. Fully automatic machines, capsule and pod machines, machines used exclusively with pre-ground coffee, manual lever machines, and defective equipment are not suitable. For frothing milk and latte art, the machine also needs a working steam wand. Therefore, always state the brand and model of your espresso machine and coffee grinder in your application.

What does a private barista workshop at home in Castricum cost?

Barista Focusof approximately 90 minutes is available from €179 and Barista Masterof approximately 120 minutes from €219. As Castricum is further away from the departure address in Utrecht, this is not a fixed rate for Castricum. The final price depends on, among other things, the chosen workshop, the address, the travel distance, and practical feasibility. You will receive one personalized total price in advance, which includes VAT, travel time, travel costs, and any parking costs.

What is the difference between Barista Focus and Barista Master?

We're here to make things easy for you! Your first step to getting the right size is checking out our size chart. It's got all the info you need to measure yourself and find your perfect fit. We also provide extra details on each product page, like the model's size and fit descriptions. If you're still not sure, our team is always happy to help. Just send us a message!

Can I attend the workshop with my partner, family, or friends?

Yes. One to five participants can attend for the same workshop price. The workshop will still last approximately 90 or 120 minutes. With more participants, the available personal practice time will be divided among more people. If you wish to participate with more than five people, please indicate this in your request so that the necessary setup and extra time can be assessed in advance.

What do I need to prepare for the workshop?

Ensure you have a working espresso machine and coffee grinder, preferably at least 250 grams of the coffee beans you normally use, a suitable tamper, milk jug, cups, and cleaning cloths. For frothing milk, you will need at least one liter of chilled milk; with multiple participants, some extra milk is practical. In addition, clear about two square meters of workspace and ensure a power outlet and a sink with running water are nearby. If your own coffee beans are not available or not suitable, Geert-Jan can work with the Aficionado beans he brings.

I have another question...

Private barista workshop on your own espresso machine in Castricum and surroundings

Do you live in Castricum and find that your espresso machine has more potential than you're currently utilizing? Then you don't need to take your equipment to a course location for personal instruction. Geert-Jan will come to you and work in your own kitchen with the semi-automatic espresso machine and coffee grinder you use daily.

This is also possible if you live in Bakkum, Limmen, Akersloot, or De Woude. Requests from nearby places such as Uitgeest, Heiloo, and Heemskerk can also be considered. Your exact place of residence does not change the substantive approach: you will always receive a personalized total price in advance based on location, travel distance, chosen workshop, and practical feasibility.
