Barista workshop at home in Gelderland on your own equipment

A barista workshop at home in Gelderland is intended for home baristas who not only want to see how someone else makes espresso, but want to better understand their own equipment.Geert-Jan de Baristamancomes to your home and works with the semi-automatic espresso machine and coffee grinder you use daily. Together, you’ll look at your coffee beans, how fine or coarse you grind, how much coffee you use, how much espresso ends up in the cup, and what you then taste.

You can choose between Barista Focusof approximately 90 minutes with a maximum of two main components or Barista Masterof approximately 120 minutes with the full training. Milk frothing and basic latte art can also be practiced. You can participate alone, with your partner, as a family, or with a small group of friends. Requests are possible from all over Gelderland; for each address, travel distance and practical feasibility will be assessed in advance.

You have a good espresso machine, but the coffee keeps changing

A semi-automatic espresso machine gives you a lot of control, but that also means you have to make choices yourself. If you don't know which setting influences the taste, making coffee quickly becomes a series of small guesses. During the workshop, you will learn to recognize where the difference truly arises.

  • One time your espresso tastes good and the next it's sour or bitter

You use the same machine, yet every cup seems different. You learn to observe how much ground coffee you use, how much espresso ends up in the cup, how long it takes, and what the taste tells you. This makes it clearer which adjustment is logical.

  • You keep adjusting your coffee grinder finer and coarser without a consistent approach

If the espresso runs too fast, you often need to grind finer; if almost nothing comes out, the grind might be too fine. During the workshop, you will learn not only which knob to turn, but especially when and why you do it.

  • Frothing milk works sometimes, but not reliably yet

The milk might become hot, frothy, or full of large bubbles, whereas you want a smooth texture for cappuccino and latte art. You practice when to add air, how to swirl the milk, and when to stop heating.

What is a private at-home barista workshop in Gelderland?

Geert-Jan will visit you at home and teach you how to work with your own functioning semi-automatic espresso machine and coffee grinder. The explanation will be tailored to your experience, coffee beans, taste, and questions. You can choose to practice one or two specific topics or opt for the full training, from coffee beans to espresso, milk, and basic latte art.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

For beginning home baristas who have just bought a semi-automatic espresso machine, but also for coffee lovers who have been making coffee for a while and are constantly encountering the same problem. You can attend the workshop alone, with your partner, as a family, or with a small group of friends. No experience is necessary: the explanation starts with what you already know and with the equipment you have at home.

Key conditions

  • Barista Focus takes approximately 90 minutes and covers a maximum of two main topics.
  • Barista Master takes approximately 120 minutes and covers all three main topics.
  • You will work on a functional semi-automatic espresso machine with an integrated or separate coffee grinder.
  • The espresso machine needs a steam wand.
  • One to five participants can attend the same workshop.
  • Applications can be submitted from all over Gelderland.

Why practicing on your own espresso machine makes such a difference

Every espresso machine and coffee grinder works a little differently. One coffee grinder changes quite a lot with each step, while with another grinder you can make very small adjustments. The filter basket, the steam wand, and the amount of coffee that fits in the machine also influence how you work at home.

Therefore, a good recipe on an unfamiliar training machine is not automatically the same recipe that works in your kitchen. During the workshop, you will make several espressos yourself, measure what happens, and taste the difference. For example, you will learn why an espresso can extract faster when you grind coarser and why a different coffee bean may require readjustment.

The goal is not for one espresso to turn out well during the workshop. The goal is for you to better understand how to achieve a good result yourself afterward.

You don't learn to remember a single setting, but how to find the right setting yourself again.

1. Request your personal price and available times

In your request, you provide the workshop address, the brand and model of your espresso machine and coffee grinder, the expected number of participants, and your desired workshop variant, among other things. If you choose Barista Focus, you also indicate which topics you primarily want to practice. Geert-Jan then assesses whether the equipment and location are suitable and responds personally with the possibilities, available times, and a total price. After agreement, you will receive a definitive confirmation and a personal payment link. The chosen date is definitively reserved after payment has been received within 24 hours.

Work on what makes a difference to your coffee

With Barista Focusyou choose a maximum of two main components: selecting coffee beans and cleaning, making espresso and adjusting the grinder, or frothing milk and basic latte art. With Barista Masteryou go through all three components in approximately 120 minutes. For example, you discuss how fresh your coffee is and which roast suits your taste, adjust the grinder finer or coarser, make different espressos and compare the taste. If you also choose milk, you practice with the milk and steam wand that you actually use at home. Questions may be asked throughout the workshop.

What you can improve yourself after the workshop

You know more precisely which setting to adjust

You will learn how the amount of coffee, the amount of espresso, extraction time, grind size, and taste are interrelated. This will prevent you from randomly changing multiple settings simultaneously when an espresso is not up to par.

What you can improve yourself after the workshop

You are working out on equipment you will use again the next morning

All operations are performed on your own espresso machine and coffee grinder. This means you don't have to translate techniques from an unfamiliar training machine to your own kitchen.

"Wat bieden wij?"

For home baristas who want to better learn how to use their own equipment

This workshop is a good fit if you've recently purchased a semi-automatic espresso machine and are finding that good espresso doesn't happen automatically. Even if you've been making coffee for a while, a recurring problem can be addressed specifically. Perhaps your espresso flows too quickly, you're having trouble adjusting your coffee grinder, or you're not sure which beans suit your taste. Maybe you can foam milk reasonably well, but you're not yet achieving a fine, smooth texture. You can participate alone or with your partner, family, or a small group of friends. For one to five participants, the agreed workshop duration remains the same, meaning that with a larger group, the available individual practice time will be divided among more people.

What is the difference between Barista Focus and Barista Master?

Barista Focuslasts approximately 90 minutes and is designed for when you mainly want to address one or two specific topics. You choose a maximum of two of the three main components: choosing coffee beans and cleaning, making espresso and adjusting the grinder, or frothing milk and basic latte art. Barista Masterlasts approximately 120 minutes and covers all three main components. This makes Master particularly suitable if you want to better understand the entire process from coffee bean to espresso and milk drink.

Can I take the workshop with my partner, family, or friends?

Yes. One to five participants fall within the same workshop price and the same agreed-upon workshop duration. For more than five participants, prior consultation is required to assess whether additional time and an adjusted setup are needed.

I have another question...

In-home barista training in Gelderland for better espresso on your own machine

Whether you live in Arnhem, Nijmegen, Apeldoorn, Ede, Wageningen, Tiel, Doetinchem, Zutphen, Harderwijk, or anywhere else in Gelderland: the basics of good espresso remain the same. You need to know how much coffee you use, how much espresso comes out, how quickly that happens, and what you taste afterwards. At the same time, every combination of espresso machine, coffee grinder, and coffee beans reacts slightly differently.

That's why, during the workshop, Geert-Jan doesn't work from a single setting that everyone has to copy. You learn how to measure, taste, and adjust your own equipment step by step. When making adjustments, he uses, among other things, a precision scale and a shot glass. If you want to more easily replicate that method at home afterwards, you could, for example, look at a coffee scale with automatic timer from Barista Essentialsor espresso shot glasses for checking your output.

Such a tool is not a substitute for proper adjustment. It primarily makes what is happening visible. If you still don't understand why your espresso tastes sour, bitter, or inconsistent, The 3 Golden Rules of Espressowill help you to evaluate dosage, espresso quantity, time, and grind in a clear sequence.
